Casper tests a medical candidate’s sound judgment. Candidates are expected to provide responses to complex and complicated situations. Moreover, they are expected to provide the reasons for their responses. It is important for students to become comfortable with the type of situations in Casper. Additionally, it is advantageous to apply as many principles of professionalism as you can. Familiarize yourself with the Rules of Professional Responsibility pertaining to medical doctors.
Following is a list of six Casper scenarios:
  1. You and your co – workers have attended a mandatory work training session. This session lasted three months and the company paid for it. At present, you are working, and a co-worker asks you for assistance in reviewing the training session material with
him at work. You do so. This means you are not working. Another co-worker notices and voices his concern that the manager disapproves of this type of conduct because it affects productivity. He threatens to inform the manager, with whom he is close. What
should you do? Explain your answer.
  2. You witness an elderly person back into a car in the mall parking lot. The elderly person comes out of her car, sees the damage, and then leaves. What is your response and why?
  3. You and your best friend/roommate are working on an essay assignment in your dorm room. Your friend asks you to help him cheat on the essay. This is not the first time. When you advise him “no,” he turns it around and accuses you of cheating. Later, he
reports you to the professor. The professor advises you that the two essays are too like be coincidental. Further, he advises you that the matter will be fully investigated, and discipline measures will take place, including expulsion from the university. How do you
    respond?
  4. You overhear a conversation between your aunt and uncle, wherein your uncle admits to tax evasion. Your aunt is emotional and cries. Your uncle states that COVID hit him hard, and that he had to keep his family afloat somehow. Your uncle also admits to
illegal business dealings for the same reason. Do you report your uncle to the appropriate revenue agency and law enforcement?
  5. Your father is cheating on your mother with his office manager. Do you tell your mother? Explain your answer.
  6. You witness a lady steal a sweater at a clothing store. She is not caught. How do you respond?

On my next blog, I will continue to write about Casper.

  1. You work in a Medical Office as a receptionist. You have worked there for five years. You observe that the doctor is dating his patients, and he is married. You inform the doctor that you know about this situation, and he responds, “It is none of your business. If you want to keep your job and have my help in getting you into Medical School, I suggest you keep your mouth shut!” What is the correct course of action?
  2. One of your cousins had his father complete the essay portion of his Medical School Applications. This cousin brags about this. He also brags about his mother giving his references gifts. Your friend gets accepted into Medical School. Do you disclose this information to his Medical School?
  3. Your aunt is doing your cousin’s homework assignments during the COVID virtual learning time. She is a teacher who thinks it is perfectly acceptable to help her children cheat. She explains that her own mother, also a teacher, helped her and her siblings cheat by doing their assignments. Her brother is a successful dentist. What do you do?
  4. How do you feel about whistleblowers? How do you feel about a whistleblower who is himself guilty of the very crime of which he is accused? How do you feel about this whistleblower getting full immunity from prosecution because of his status as a whistleblower?
  5. You are a doctor who works with a group of physicians. One such physician is heavily in debt from student loans. His wife is expecting their third child and she does not work outside of their home. This physician is fabricating subscriptions for patients who want painkillers when they really do not need them. He is paid handsomely for so doing. The money he makes goes toward paying off his student loan. When you confront him, he advises he will stop once his loan is paid off. How do you react?
  6. You are a doctor. A patient brings in her daughter and you suspect child abuse. The patient is also your next-door neighbour. You and your wife have observed that her husband is quite aggressive, loud, and domineering. Your wife has had altercations with the husband who has threatened her in very veiled language. What is the proper course of action to take with respect to the daughter, your patient, and your own wife?
